What is SEO? & Why it’s so Important for Your Business

What is SEO?

What is SEO? Before we proceed, we must know what the acronym SEO stands for. The acronym SEO is Search Engine Optimization. Now, what does that mean? Well, first what are we optimizing? It’s certainly not the search engine. We are optimizing a website so it will work efficiently with the Google search engine. By doing so your website will be found when specific search terms are used when searching on Google.

Google Local Search

Let’s say you are a plumber in Brooklyn, NY.  A query is made on the Google search engine for a Plumber Brooklyn, NY. In about half a second the results show up with thousands of listings but like everyone else we are only interested in the first three listings on the first page. That is where your business needs to be for a popular search term or keyword. There are literally thousands of searches done every day for a plumber in Brooklyn or any other business. By not being on the top 3 on the first page you are forgoing literally thousands of dollars of business. We see our competitors are there and they are making the thousands of dollars we are losing. The questions we must ask is, where do we want to be?  Are we willing to invest the money for our business to be there? If you answered yes to these questions, then you have taken the first step for your business to be ranked on the first page on the Google search engine.

Why Invest in SEO?

Investing in SEO is a low-cost way of advertising one’s business, compared to non-internet advertising. I’m sure many of you tried SEO and all you accomplished was to spend your hard-earned money with little or no results to show for it. Unfortunately like many other businesses out there, there are scams. One of the only ways to avoid being scammed is to check them out on the internet. Try doing a search on Google like using the search term scam or fraud and the company’s name. Another thing you can try is doing a search on Linked in. Look at their profile, it will give you a good feel as to who they are. I could go on and on but that is not the purpose of this article. If you would like a more in-depth article you send me an e mail or post a comment.

Planning Your SEO strategy

There are many tools out there that are used to analyze your website. The type of analysis we are looking for will cover the following:

A. Technical analysis

which shows the website’s loading speed and the ratio between code and content. These are the major factors in your site’s performance.

B. On Page SEO

This checks all your Meta and h tags, internal, external linking and of course the image Alt tags. These govern on how Google will crawl your website.

C. Off Page SEO

The main factor here is back links. How many do you have? What is the DA {Domain Authority) of these links? Anyone can have back links but are they the right ones. The wrong ones can get you penalized.

I only mentioned a few major points that an SEO audit covers. There are a lot more areas that I did not mention but if you are interested in knowing them just shoot me an email to steven@stevesseo.com or just visit my website https://stevesseo.com.

If you have specific questions that you would like to ask me just to put them in the comment section of this Blog post.

I hope that I was able to shed a little light on the subject.
